FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS FIBER ANYWAY? AND WHY IS IT SO GREAT?
Fiber refers to an optical glass fiber inside a cable which is used to carry your Internet, Phone and TV service as a single beam of light. Fiber is capable of incredibly fast speeds and can carry our signal very long distances, so we can provide super fast reliable service even in remote areas. Since the cable is not electrical and buried underground, our fiber services are very reliable and unaffected by storms, lightning, wind, or other factors. The almost unlimited capacity of fiber means once we have fiber to your house, you'll have great service to meet your needs for decades to come.
HOW DOES THE FIBER GET TO MY HOUSE? WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
In most areas we run our fiber optic cable underground down the side of the road. Every few houses we place a splice point in a pedestal or hand hole. From there, we use a small machine to bury a cable through your yard and up to the side of your house. A plastic enclosure on the side of the house converts the fiber signal to the Internet, Phone and TV signals for your house.
WHAT GETS INSTALLED INSIDE? WHAT DO I NEED TO PROVIDE?
Our standard installation includes running cable from outside to a single equipment location inside through the basement or crawl space or through an exteior wall. The install tech will install a small white fiber jack, and provide a fiber modem to convert the light signal to an Internet/Ethernet signal. If you choose our SuperMESH Wifi Router, the tech will install that, or let you connect your own router if you decide to use a customer provided router.
I WANT FIBER! WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET IT?
If you live on a road where we have fiber already, just give our office a call to sign up. It generally takes 1-2 weeks to install on an existing cable route. Check current Fiber areas here.
If we're not on your road yet, please check with the office about current expansion plans.
If we are not able to get enough interest, or you live on a road with very few houses, we can build fiber to your house as a paid extension project. Contact our office for a quote.
DO YOU HAVE A BUNDLE PRICE? WHAT IF I WANT JUST SOME OF THE SERVICES?
Since our TV service and Phone service are provisioned over the Internet connection, all customers must have the Internet service. Adding Phone or TV service is optional. The advertised pricing already includes a "bundle" discount. It's not possible to buy just the phone service or just the TV service.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT PLAN I NEED? WHAT'S A MEG ANYWAY? IS THIS UNLIMITED?
All of our Internet service plans are unlimited data usage, which is typically measured in Gigabytes (GB or Gigs).
Our service is sold based on the speed of the connection, measured in Megabits per Second (Mbps) or "Megs" for short. Our fiber service is symmetrical, meaning you get the same fast speed in both the upload and download direction, a big benefit over most other providers.
The best way we have to recommend a plan is based on the number of devices in the home. We recommend to allow at least 5 Megs per device to allow everyone to use it without noticing any slowdowns. So our 10Meg plan would be for 2 devices, 25Meg for up to 5 devices, etc. While this is a general guideline, there is no actual limit on the number of devices connected and all devices will share the incoming speed to the house.
WILL I BE ABLE TO GET GOOD WIFI IN MY WHOLE HOUSE? OR IN MY OUTBUILDING?
Our wifi equipment has quite good range, but the size of your house and the building materials affect how the signal covers your house. Our technician will recommend the best location for the router, based on his best judgement. In the event coverage is not sufficient, we can install an additional wifi access point to boost coverage in any dead spots, at an additional one-time cost. If you want service in an outbuilding on the same property, we can do that too, also just a one-time cost. Any performance testing to verify the service is working properly will be done on a hardwired connection - wifi speeds can vary and are best effort.
ARE THERE ANY HIDDEN COSTS OR EXTRA TAXES OR FEES? ARE THE PRICES GOING TO GO UP LATER?
Nobody likes billing surprises and neither do we! We charge every customer the same low everyday price. We don't do teaser rates that jump up later on, or special discounts for only new customers.
We also don't charge any extra fees beyond the minimum required by law.
For the Internet service, there are no taxes or fees above the advertised price.
For phone service, we must charge sales tax, federal universal service fee, and state/local 911 fees which vary by county. This generally adds around five to eight dollars to your phone bill.
For TV service, we must charge a local franchise fee if your city/village/township chose to require one in our franchise agreement. This can be from zero to five percent.
